When a relationship breaks down, maintenance payments may have to be paid by one of the parents/spouses to the other. The level of maintenance depends on the income and the needs of either parent and children. Child support or maintenance for children arises if children are under 18, or 23 if in full-time education. The District Court can award up to €500.00 per week to a spouse and up to €150.00 per child per week. If higher maintenance is required, it will be necessary to make an application to the Circuit Court.
